Words With Friends Kills Phone Battery

This is the second time a Zynga app update from Words With Friends has crashed my phone.  Words With Friends status updates on the notifications drain the battery life.  Is there a reason that Zynga apps are so aggressive with updates and notifications?  Who else has experiencing similar problems.  I have also noticed that Zynga Poker also causes problems on my phone.

I am curious if iPhone users are experiencing similar problems or is it just on Android phones.  I am also wondering if anyone else experiences problems only if they have WiFi turned on?
